Turning text messages into a fundraising engine for nonprofits

Polyuno built KindEngage, a multi-channel SMS and email fundraising platform that lets nonprofits launch appeals in minutes and reach donors where they actually read.

The challenge

Most nonprofits rely on email blasts and manual donor outreach, yet inbox open rates keep falling and small teams have no time to run the kind of personalized, multi-channel campaigns that actually move money. They needed a way to reach supporters on the channel they read most — text — without hiring a technical team or stitching together five disconnected tools.

Our solution

Polyuno designed and built KindEngage from the ground up: a unified SMS and email fundraising platform with campaign automation, segmented donor lists, real-time delivery and reply handling, and Stripe-powered donation flows. Nonprofit staff can write an appeal once and send it across channels, then watch results update live.

The challenge

Nonprofit fundraising teams are some of the most resource-constrained operators we work with. A single program director often owns donor communications, event logistics, grant reporting, and volunteer coordination all at once. When it comes time to run a fundraising appeal, the tooling actively works against them: email open rates have been sliding for years, donor data lives in spreadsheets and a separate CRM, and the platforms that promise "multi-channel" engagement are priced and built for large enterprises with dedicated marketing departments.

The result is a painful gap. The channel donors actually read — text messaging — is the hardest one for a small team to use well. Sending compliant, personalized SMS at scale normally means wrestling with carrier rules, opt-in management, and developer-only APIs. So most nonprofits simply don't do it, and they leave engagement and donations on the table during exactly the moments that matter most: year-end giving, disaster response, and time-sensitive matching campaigns.

KindEngage came to Polyuno with a clear thesis: if a nonprofit could run a coordinated SMS and email appeal as easily as writing a single email, fundraising results would follow. The job was to turn that thesis into a real, reliable product.

Our approach

We started where we always do — with the people who would actually use the tool. We mapped the real workflow of a nonprofit communications lead, from importing a donor list to writing an appeal to following up with people who replied. That research shaped a core principle for the build: every feature had to be usable by someone non-technical, under time pressure, on the day of a campaign.

From there we made deliberate architecture choices. We built KindEngage as a SaaS product on a modern, type-safe stack so it could scale from a single small organization to many without re-platforming. We treated deliverability and compliance as first-class concerns rather than afterthoughts, because in SMS the difference between a delivered message and a blocked one is the difference between a successful appeal and a wasted one. And we leaned heavily on business automation so that the repetitive parts of a campaign — scheduling, segmenting, follow-ups, receipts — happened without staff having to babysit them.

For nonprofits, trust is the product. We built opt-in tracking, unsubscribe handling, and reply management directly into the core so that every campaign stays compliant and respectful of donors by default.

What we built

KindEngage is a complete, multi-channel fundraising platform. The first release focused on the workflows that drive donations:

  • Unified campaign composer — write an appeal once and send it across SMS and email, with channel-appropriate previews and personalization tokens.
  • Two-way SMS powered by Twilio — messages send and replies come back into a shared inbox, so a thank-you or a question never gets lost.
  • Donor segmentation — group supporters by giving history, location, or custom tags to target the right ask to the right people.
  • Stripe-powered donation flows — branded, mobile-friendly giving pages so a donor can go from text message to completed gift in seconds.
  • Campaign automation — scheduled sends, automated follow-ups to non-responders, and instant donation receipts.
  • Live results dashboard — opens, clicks, replies, and dollars raised update in real time during a campaign.
  • Compliance built in — opt-in/opt-out management and unsubscribe handling baked into every channel.

Results & impact

The change for the teams using KindEngage is felt in two places: time and reach. Campaigns that used to take an afternoon to prepare now go out in a fraction of the time, and the automation handles the follow-ups that staff previously didn't have capacity to send at all. Just as importantly, moving appeals onto SMS put them in front of donors on a channel where messages actually get read — open rates on text-based appeals run dramatically higher than the email-only norm these organizations were used to.

  • Higher engagement: SMS appeals see open rates far above the email baseline, putting time-sensitive asks in front of donors immediately.
  • Hours saved weekly: automation eliminates the manual scheduling, segmenting, and follow-up work that consumed staff time.
  • One platform, two channels: teams stopped paying for and juggling separate SMS and email tools.

By giving small teams a tool built for how they actually work, KindEngage helps mission-driven organizations punch well above their weight. You can see more about the KindEngage platform and the broader work we do in nonprofit technology.

The technology

KindEngage runs on Next.js and TypeScript for a fast, reliable, type-safe foundation, with PostgreSQL handling donor data and campaign history. Twilio powers compliant two-way SMS at scale, while Stripe handles secure donation processing and receipts. The whole system is designed to stay simple for the people using it and dependable under the spikes of a year-end giving push.

Building tools that help good organizations do more with less is some of the most rewarding work we do. If your nonprofit is ready to reach donors where they actually are, we'd love to talk — get in touch with Polyuno.
